Marek Keprt (b. 1974, Olomouc) a pianist, composer, musicologist, teacher, director of the international music festival of contemporary music - MusicOlomouc and artistic director of Olomouc ensemble of contemporary music - Lichtzwang.
He studied piano (under A. Jenner
and C. Graf-Adnet) and composition (under I. Eröd and D. Kaufmann) at the
Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna between 1992 and 2000. He
has also completed piano master courses under A. Jenner (Vienna), J. Tocco
(Lucerne), C. Király (Budapest), C. Graf-Adnet (Vienna) and A. Weissenberg
(Engelberg). He was a resident of Ostrava Days 2017 Institute and in 2018 he
participated at "CEEC Composers Field Trip" in China.
Since 2002, he has been working as an assistant professor (since 2025 as an associate professor) at the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc. He worked as a piano and music theory teacher at the Religious Conservatory in Opava (2002 - 2014). He gave lectures at universities and music academies in Prague, Bratislava, Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Krakow as well as participated in international conferences and congresses.
The range of his repertoire includes the pieces from the periods of Romanticism, the turn of the 19th/20th centuries and the second half of the 20th century to the compositions of contemporary authors particularly on the music of Scriabin, Takemitsu, Russian avatgarde of the first half of the 20th century (Lourie, Vyšněgradskij, Roslavec, Obuchov), French spectralism (Messiaen, Murail, Pesson) and his own compositions. He regularly perform in Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and South Korea. As a soloist he collaborates with Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and records for the Czech Radio.
Keprt's compositions are primarily based on direct and intensive impact of sound and the sophisticated blending of instrumental colours. In his compositions, Keprt attempts to capture an unstable and volatile sound world – it may even be stated that he is a composer of "the present moment"; of a music which requires absolute concentration from the listener.
Keprt was awared by several prizes at the competition Generace Ostrava and The Alban Berg Foundation in Vienna for his work. His compositions were performed in the Czech Republic, in some others European countries and also in the U.S.
